Justin Fairfax Ex-Virginia Lt. Gov. Kills Wife, Dies by Suicide

Justin Fairfax Kills Wife, Dies by Suicide. A shocking tragedy hit Annandale, Virginia, early Thursday morning. Former lieutenant governor Justin Fairfax killed his wife, Cerina Fairfax, then shot himself. Fairfax County police say the couple died at home in what looks like a murder-suicide.

Police responded to the scene just after midnight. Officers arrived at the 8100 block of Guinevere Drive and found both victims dead inside the residence. Notably, Fairfax first shot his wife multiple times in the basement of the home. He then moved upstairs to the primary bedroom and fatally shot himself.

Meanwhile, authorities quickly identified a witness with direct knowledge of the events. The couple’s teenage son called 911 just after midnight. He initially told dispatchers he believed someone had stabbed his mother, Cerina Fairfax. However, when police arrived, they discovered bullet casings near her body. Consequently, investigators immediately classified the scene as a domestic shooting.

Furthermore, Fairfax County Police Capt. Chris Cosgriff addressed the public in a briefing. He stated that the adult male shot the adult female before shooting himself in a domestic-related incident. Additionally, Cosgriff confirmed that authorities initially withheld the victims’ names pending notification of next of kin.

Divorce Proceedings Play Central Role

As investigators pieced together a timeline, a troubled marriage emerged as a key factor. Police confirmed Fairfax and his wife were in the early stages of divorce proceedings. Fairfax had recently received divorce-related paperwork. Although the couple still shared the same house, they lived separately in different bedrooms.

Moreover, the marital conflict had already surfaced in prior police calls. In January, Fairfax called police, claiming his wife had assaulted him. However, police ultimately determined no assault took place. Cameras installed by Cerina Fairfax captured footage that contradicted his claim. Therefore, authorities closed that case without charges.

Both Teenage Children Were Home

Perhaps most distressing, the couple’s teenage children witnessed the nightmare unfold at close range. Both teenagers were inside the home when the incident occurred. As a result, investigators now work with child welfare officials to provide the minors with appropriate support and care.

A Political Career Now Overshadowed

Justin Fairfax once stood among Virginia’s most prominent political figures. He served as Virginia’s 41st lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022. Furthermore, Fairfax built his reputation as a rising star in the Democratic Party. Nevertheless, his political career fell under scrutiny in 2019 when two women separately accused him of sexual assault. Consequently, calls for his resignation followed from multiple quarters. However, Fairfax denied all allegations and refused to step down.

After that, he went back to private legal work. Even so, his name stayed well known in Virginia politics.

Investigators Continue Their Work

By Thursday morning, Fairfax County police were still working through the scene. Police also want anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-411-TIPS. Since the investigation is still ongoing, authorities haven’t issued the complete official statement yet.

Also, officials still haven’t said if earlier domestic violence reports existed before the January 2026 incident. But insiders say the divorce has stirred major tension at home over the past few weeks.

A Community in Shock

In quiet Annandale, neighbours couldn’t believe it on Thursday morning. Overall, this incident stands out as one of Virginia’s biggest homegrown tragedies in recent history, involving a former elected official.
