Artemis II Update: Proximity Ops Done, Perigee Burn Next

NASA’s Artemis II Update: crew has successfully wrapped up the proximity operations demonstration. Over approximately 70 minutes, the crew guided the Orion spacecraft named Integrity through controlled approach and retreat manoeuvres, using the detached Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS) as a reference target.

Furthermore, pilot Victor Glover manually flew Orion as close as 30 feet from the ICPS, relying entirely on visual cues  without rangefinders to judge distances precisely. Consequently, the demo validated Orion’s manual control systems during the mission’s first crewed flight.

Additionally, Orion then executed an automated departure burn, safely backing away from the ICPS. Subsequently, the ICPS will perform its own disposal burn and re-enter Earth’s atmosphere over a remote region of the Pacific Ocean.

Meanwhile, the crew encountered a minor setback. Mission control and the crew worked together to restore Orion’s toilet to normal operations after a blinking fault light appeared ahead of the apogee raise burn. Nevertheless, teams resolved the issue quickly.

Following the fix, mission control woke the crew at 7:06 a.m. EDT with the song “Sleepyhead” by Young and Sick. Then, Orion’s service module engine fired for 43 seconds, successfully completing the perigee-raise burn and raising the spacecraft’s perigee.

As a result, NASA now targets the translunar injection burn at approximately 8 p.m. ET Thursday. That burn will propel Orion out of Earth’s orbit and send the four-person crew toward the Moon.

Therefore, Artemis II Update moving steadily forward, milestone by milestone, toward humanity’s historic lunar return.
