US Fuel Blockade on Cuba Ends, Trump Clears Russian Tanker

US Fuel Blockade as President Donald Trump dramatically reversed course Sunday. He announced that the US. would allow a Russian oil tanker to reach Cuba. Consequently, this decision breaks his own administration’s fuel blockade on the island.

The Russian tanker Anatoly Kolodkin carries nearly 730,000 barrels of crude oil. Furthermore, ship-tracking data confirms it was just off Cuba’s eastern tip Sunday night and is slated to arrive in Matanzas by Tuesday.

Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, “If a country wants to send some oil into Cuba right now, I have no problem, whether it’s Russiaโ€ฆ” Additionally, he dismissed concerns about aiding Vladimir Putin. “He loses one boatload of oil, that’s all it is,” Trump said.

Meanwhile, Cuba desperately needs this relief. Cuba has not received an oil tanker in three months, according to President Miguel Dรญaz-Canel. As a result, strict gasoline rationing and widespread blackouts have gripped the country of 10 million people. Moreover, hospitals have struggled to keep operating theaters open due to the energy crunch.

So, how did this crisis begin? The US. cut off Venezuelan oil exports to Cuba after toppling Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on January 3. Subsequently, Trump threatened to impose tariffs on any country sending crude to Cuba.

Nevertheless, blocking the tanker by force could have raised dangerous tensions at sea with Russia. Therefore, the US. Coast Guard allowed the vessel to sail through unchallenged.

The move underscores a growing trend: sanctions frameworks are becoming more flexible and situational as governments respond to supply shocks. Ultimately, however, experts note the shipment offers only short-term relief to Cuba’s collapsing economy.
