Trump Warns Iran, President Donald Trump issued a dramatic ultimatum against Iran on Sunday. He threatened to destroy “every power plant” and bridge if Tehran refuses to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Trump told the Wall Street Journal that “if they don’t do something by Tuesday evening, they won’t have any power plants and they won’t have any bridges standing.”
Trump made the threat in an expletive-laden Truth Social post, declaring Tuesday would be “Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran.” Subsequently, Trump clarified the final deadline as “Tuesday, 8:00 P.M. Eastern Time.”
Meanwhile, Iran refused to yield. Iranian officials stated the strait would only reopen when the country is “fully compensated” for war damages under a new legal regime. Furthermore, Iran’s military joint command warned it would step up retaliatory attacks on regional oil and civilian infrastructure if the US. and Israel strike such targets inside Iran.
Consequently, the crisis is already shaking global markets. Brent crude rose to $109.32 per barrel, while WTI crude traded at $111.03, as Trump’s threats unsettled investors worldwide. Additionally, rising energy, shipping, and fertilizer costs are already hitting consumers in the US. and globally, with sharper consequences expected for poorer, import-dependent countries.
However, international alarm is growing sharply. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi argued that targeting power plants and bridges could amount to war crimes under Article 8(2)(b) of the Rome Statute. Similarly, Amnesty International Secretary General Agnes Callamard warned that destroying power plants would cut heat, electricity, water, and movement for Iranian civilians.
Nevertheless, Trump expressed no concern. When asked about civilian impact, Trump told the Wall Street Journal that Iranians “want us to do it” and are already “living in hell.”
Meanwhile, Trump claimed on Fox News that negotiations were ongoing and suggested there was a “good chance” of a deal by Monday.
