Seize Iran’s Oil, President Donald Trump has openly declared his preference for seizing Iran’s oil. Furthermore, he confirmed on Sunday that the US. is actively weighing the possibility of controlling Kharg Island. Trump told the Financial Times, “My favourite thing is to take the oil in Iran.” Meanwhile, he acknowledged that any seizure would require American forces to remain there long-term. “Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don’t,” he added. “We have a lot of options.”
Kharg Island, just under 20 miles off Iran’s coast, handles more than 90% of the country’s oil exports. Consequently, analysts regard it as Tehran’s single most critical economic artery. The terminal carries a loading capacity of roughly 7 million barrels per day. Therefore, any disruption would immediately shake global energy markets.
The US. military already struck Kharg Island on March 13, targeting Iran’s most critical oil terminal. Additionally, Central Command confirmed hitting 90 targets, including naval mine storage facilities and missile storage bunkers.
Nevertheless, military experts urge caution. Retired Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery warned that seizing the island does not automatically mean controlling Iran’s oil production. Moreover, analysts at JPMorgan noted that disabling Kharg could rapidly trigger upstream shut-ins across major southwest oil fields.
On the diplomatic front, Trump claimed Iran agreed to “most of” the 15-point US. demand list, conveyed through Pakistan. However, Iran’s response remains skeptical. Furthermore, Trump’s administration granted Iran a 10-day extension to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, pausing energy infrastructure attacks through April 6.
Ultimately, the standoff between diplomacy and military escalation continues to define this rapidly evolving conflict.
