Trump Fires Attorney General Pam Bondi; Todd Blanche Comes

President Donald Trump fires Attorney General Pam Bondi on Thursday, April 2, 2026. He announced the decision through a Truth Social post. Consequently, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche will now serve as acting attorney general.

Trump publicly praised Bondi despite firing her. However, sources told NBC News that he grew ” more and more frustrated” with Bondi in recent days. Specifically, her mishandling of DOJ files related to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein triggered the fallout. Additionally, Trump expressed deep anger over her failure to prosecute enough of his political opponents.

Furthermore, two high-profile cases illustrate Bondi’s struggles. The DOJ indicted former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James. However, a federal judge dismissed both cases, ruling that the appointed prosecutor was unlawfully serving.

Meanwhile, Trump had privately discussed replacing Bondi with EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin. Sources told Fox News that Trump and Zeldin even met at the White House to discuss the transition. Nevertheless, Blanche currently holds the acting role.

Notably, Bondi’s roughly 15-month tenure marks the shortest for a Senate-confirmed attorney general since William Saxbe left office in 1975. Moreover, she becomes the second cabinet official Trump has ousted, following the firing of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem almost one month earlier.

In response, Bondi posted on X that she remains “eternally grateful” to Trump and will continue fighting for his administration. Similarly, Blanche praised her leadership publicly. Meanwhile, House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries sharply called Bondi “the most corrupt Attorney General in modern American history.”

Furthermore, the House Oversight Committee still plans to depose Bondi, with Democrats insisting her firing does not exempt her from testifying. Consequently, the political fallout from her removal continues to grow rapidly.
