Pristine Star Found, Astronomers have made a stunning breakthrough. A team of scientists, including undergraduate students at the University of Chicago, discovered the most chemically pristine star yet known in the universe. Furthermore, this remarkable find rewrites our understanding of cosmic history.
The star, designated SDSS J0715−7334, shines from the halo of the Large Magellanic Cloud, roughly 80,000 light-years away. Notably, it contains almost no heavy elements. Detailed analysis revealed that it holds less than 0.005% of the Sun’s metal content, making it twice as metal-poor as the previous record holder.
Additionally, its origin story is extraordinary. Kinematic analysis traced the star’s origin to the Large Magellanic Cloud using Gaia data and orbital modeling, confirming it migrated into the Milky Way over time. Scientists, therefore, nickname it the “Ancient Immigrant.”
The discovery process was equally remarkable. The team traveled to Carnegie Science’s Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, where they used the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle (MIKE) instrument. Their first observing session took place on March 21, 2025. Moreover, students spotted the star on the very first night.
The star’s chemical fingerprint shows enrichment from an ancient supernova of a star roughly 30 times the Sun’s mass. Consequently, this makes it a second-generation star born directly from the universe’s first stellar explosions.
This star is over ten times more chemically pristine than the most extreme high-redshift galaxies currently found by the James Webb Space Telescope.
As lead researcher, Alexander Ji stated, “These pristine stars are windows into the dawn of stars and galaxies in the universe.”
