Trump Military Budget Increase, President Donald Trump officially submitted a historic budget request to Congress on Friday. He seeks $1.5 trillion in defense spending, a roughly 40 percent increase from 2026 funding levels. Notably, this marks the largest military budget proposal in modern US. history.
The White House breaks the request into a $1.15 trillion base budget and an additional $350 billion through a forthcoming reconciliation bill. Furthermore, the plan includes targeted pay raises for service members ranging from 5 to 7 percent, depending on rank.
Additionally, the Pentagon’s base budget allocates about $260 billion for procurement and around $220 billion for research, development, testing, and evaluation. Meanwhile, the Golden Dome missile shield receives $17.5 billion in the FY27 plan.
However, the proposal carries steep trade-offs. The White House simultaneously cuts domestic spending by about $73 billion, roughly 10 percent. Specifically, the Environmental Protection Agency faces the largest proportional cut, dropping 52 percent to $4.2 billion.
Trump defended the shift boldly on Truth Social. He stated the plan would build the “Dream Military” the country deserves and keep America “safe and secure.”
Nevertheless, Congress holds final authority. The budget serves as a road map, not a law. Congress can freely reject or amend it. Moreover, the $1.1 trillion base defense allocation typically requires bipartisan support through regular appropriations.
Still, key Republicans back the proposal. Senate and House Armed Services Committee chairs state that it “provides the resources needed to rebuild American military capability.” Consequently, the budget battle now moves to a divided and closely watched Congress.
