Nick Cannon sparked major controversy this week. The entertainer appeared on his YouTube talk show, Big Drive, alongside media personality Amber Rose. Together, they launched into a bold political discussion that quickly went viral.
First, Rose declared that Democrats “don’t care about people of color.” Then, Nick Cannon responded without hesitation. “People don’t know that the Democrats are the party of the KKK,” he stated directly on camera. Furthermore, he argued that Republicans “freed the slaves,” pointing to Abraham Lincoln’s legacy.
However, Cannon also distanced himself from both parties. Instead, he invoked the words of W.E.B. Du Bois. Du Bois famously argued in 1956 that no meaningful distinction exists between the two major parties; they function as one evil organization under two different names. Nick Cannon clearly endorsed this view.
Moreover, Cannon expressed surprising support for President Donald Trump. He shouted at the camera, “We got the Gulf of America now! If with Trump!” Meanwhile, he praised Trump’s second term, saying the president “does what he said he was gonna do.”
Nevertheless, historians push back on Cannon’s KKK claim. Despite a widely repeated myth, Democrats did not actually found the KKK. Additionally, the party underwent a significant ideological shift in the 1960s, when conservative Southern Democrats known as “Dixiecrats” exited after civil rights legislation was passed.
Nick Cannon described his political stance as independent and clearly rejected committing to either party as an institution. Consequently, his remarks reflect a broader shift among some Black celebrities who publicly challenge traditional Democratic loyalty. The internet reacted immediately and intensely.
