Sony just delivered a painful blow to gamers worldwide. The Japanese tech giant announced sweeping price hikes across its entire PlayStation 5 lineup, effective April 2, 2026.
Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, confirmed the decision on the official PlayStation Blog. PlayStation. She cited “continued pressures in the global economic landscape” as the driving reason.
The new prices hit hard. The PS5 Disc Edition jumps from $549.99 to $649.99, a $100 increase. The Digital Edition rises from $100 to $599.99. The PS5 Pro takes the biggest hit, climbing $150 to $899.99.
The increases arrive during a turbulent period. Rising RAM costs, driven by surging AI demand, have squeezed supply chains for memory. Ongoing trade tariff uncertainty and international conflict add further pressure on consumer electronics.
Sony also raised prices in Japan, the UK, and Europe. UK buyers face an ยฃ90 increase per model.
Industry analysts saw this coming. Piers Harding-Rolls, research director at Ampere Analysis, told CNBC that Sony likely exhausted its component price protections, forcing the move to defend slim hardware margins. He also warned that Microsoft and Nintendo could follow soon.
Sony raised U.S. prices in August 2025, adding $50 across all models. This new round cuts deeper.
The timing frustrates many players. The hike’s land just months before the expected launch of GTA 6, meaning anyone hoping to play at launch will now pay a premium to do so.
Nintendo remains the lone holdout, keeping the Switch 2 at its $450 launch price. However, analysts warn that even that may not last long.
